Im zweiten «Digital Saloon» präsentiert Kuratorin und Kunsthistorikerin Naomi Edobor ihr Projekt «OWA», was auf Bini «Zuhause» bedeutet. «OWA» ist ein wachsendes Fotoarchiv, das die Ästhetik und Kultur der Benin-Edo-Gemeinschaft in Westafrika, Nigeria, in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren dokumentiert. Ausgehend von Familienfotos beleuchtet dieser «Digital Saloon» Themen wie Identität, Mode, Familie und Gemeinschaft. Dabei wird die Rolle der Fotografie bei der Bewahrung indigener Narrative und der Gestaltung der Selbstrepräsentation in der postkolonialen Ära hervorgehoben.

Die Digital Saloons bieten den Teilnehmerinnen der digitalen Künstler*innen-Residenz «love+byte and drag+drop» eine Plattform, um sich und ihre Arbeit dem Publikum vorzustellen. Erstmals präsentieren sie neue Projektideen, die während der Residenz entstanden sind und gewähren Einblicke in ihre künstlerischen Prozesse sowie in Diskussionen, die innerhalb der Residenz angestossen wurden. Jede Künstlerin gestaltet ihren eigenen Digitalen Saloon individuell – sei es als Gespräch, Installation oder Kurzperformance. 

In the second «Digital Saloon», curator and art historian Naomi Edobor presents her project «OWA», which means «home» in Bini. The talk explores «OWA», a growing photographic archive documenting the aesthetics and cultural affairs of the Benin-Edo people from the 1970s and 80s. Through a selection of familial photographs, the session will delve into themes of identity, fashion, family, and community, highlighting the role of photography in preserving Indigenous narratives and shaping post-independence self-representation.

The «Digital Saloons» provide a platform for the participants of the digital artist residency «love+byte and drag+drop» to introduce themselves and their work to the audience. For the first time, they will present new project ideas developed during the residency, offering insights into their artistic processes and the discussions sparked within the program. Each artist shapes their own Digital Saloon individually—whether as a talk, an installation, or a short performance.

love+byte and drag+drop

The digital artist residency «love+byte and drag+drop» was launched in 2024 by the Schlachthaus Theater Bern, the Basel University of Art and Design FHNW and the University of Pedagogy FHNW and is now entering its second round:

«love+byte and drag+drop» promotes creative collaboration and networking between international artists* in the digital space. Over the course of four months, the artists delve into topics of their own choosing, explore the potential of digitality for the (performing) arts and experiment with new digital production methods and audiences. They present the resulting findings and project ideas to a local and global audience in the public «Digital Saloons».

The artists determine their own working methods and are supported by the three institutions, which provide them with resources, spaces and their network. At the end of the residency, the artists select the participants for the next residency, which means that the network is constantly evolving and expanding.

Die digitale Künstler*innen-Residenz «love+byte and drag+drop» wurde 2024 vom Schlachthaus Theater Bern, der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel sowie der Pädagogischen Hochschule FHNW ins Leben gerufen und geht nun in die zweite Runde:

«love+byte and drag+drop» fördert die kreative Zusammenarbeit und Vernetzung zwischen internationalen Künstler*innen im digitalen Raum. Während vier Monaten vertiefen sich die Kunstschaffenden in selbstgewählte Themen, erforschen das Potential der Digitalität für die Performing Arts und experimentieren mit neuen digitalen Produktionsweisen. Die daraus entstandenen Erkenntnisse und Projektideen präsentieren sie in den öffentlichen «Digital Saloons» dem lokalen und globalen Publikum.
