le spectacle explore des attitudes troubles de personnages hantés par la mémoire
convulsive d’une existence antérieure. Des figures apparaissent derrière un mur
en trompe l’œil troué de fenêtres, créant des tableaux vivants dans une atmosphère
dominée par l’humour, l’érotisme et le mystère de la présence.

Inspired by the world of the German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, the show explores the troubled attitudes of characters haunted by convulsive memories of a previous existence. Figures appear behind a trompe l’œil wall pierced with windows, creating tableaux vivants in an atmosphere dominated by humour, eroticism and the mystery of presence.

It all began in London at the National Gallery with the portrait painted by Cranach of a small princess of indeterminate age with an ambiguous look. An idea germinated and a show matured. In 1990 the Mossoux-Bonté company created «De ultieme gevoelens van Lucas Cranach de Oude» in The Netherlands. The production toured for almost 35 years across Europe. In 2024, the piece was recreated with a new generation of performers insinuating themselves into the atmospheres created by the painter and embodying his characters. It begs the question: What fascination does the work of a painter from five centuries ago hold on us and how can we convey its power and strangeness today?
